E-Cuts Download and Print Back to School Scrapbooking

An old office supply store ad once re-purposed Back to School time as the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, and why not? The comparison is apt. Late August and early September back to school shopping (and for some spoil-sports, early July) is practically a match for your holiday season spending, with clothes and school supplies taking the place of toys and video games.

Tension is another thing the shopping seasons have in common, especially if you’ve got a limited budget. Shop smart with some of our tips for getting through Back to School without losing your mind or your wallet.

First Day Basics

If planning ahead has slipped past you, or you’ve been waiting for those big sales to stock up, you may find yourself overwhelmed and spending money on stuff your kids may not need until later in the year, if ever. What do you absolutely, positively have to buy for your kids to get them through the first week of school with minimal issues?

Bookbags

An essential for the first day of school. Skip bags with favorite characters or cutesy designs and lead your child towards backpacks with lots of compartments for better weight distribution.

JanSport Classic Superbreak Backpack

In a hurry? We recommend:

JanSport Classic Superbreak Backpacks

These classic backpacks have padded shoulder straps and a front utility pocket.

Paper

The bare minimum here is a pack of loose leaf paper or a perforated notebook, so students will be able to remove and hand in completed work. See below for more on options.

Ecology Filler Paper College Ruled White

In a hurry? We recommend:

Ecology Filler Paper, College Ruled, White

Recycled filler paper that’s sturdy and bright like other filler paper, and is also very eco-friendly.

Folders

The first week of school is a flurry of paper. Unless you want to find important forms crumpled at the bottom of your child’s new backpack, send them off with a few folders.

Mead Trapper Folders

In a hurry? We recommend:

Mead Trapper 3-Hole Punch Portfolio Folders

Simple paper folders with three hole punches, making them very binder-friendly.

Writing Instruments

Pens or pencils? You’ll likely want to pack both, since some teachers have a preference. Keep things simple — a few No. 2 pencils, a sharpener, and a couple of black or blue pens.

Dixon Oriole Pencils #2 Soft - Dozen

In a hurry? We recommend:

Dixon Oriole #2 Pencils, Dozen

These easy to sharpen pencils are smudge resistant, perfect for note taking.

Tantrum Free Shopping

The lines, the the crowds, the herds of children who aren’t entirely sure they want to be there — there’s a lot to hate about back to school shopping. Minimize the time you spend fighting your way through office supplies by trying some of our shopping tips!

Back to School Stickers

  • Get a list from teachers – You won’t always get a list of supplies from teachers before the first day of school; some teachers simply prefer to handout lists on the first day, in order to ensure absolutely every student gets one. If you need that info earlier than that and you know the teacher’s name, finding their email on a school website shouldn’t be too tricky.
  • Make your own list – Even if teachers provide a supply list, you’ll want all the information in one place, particularly if your child needs supplies for multiple subjects or if you have more than one child.
  • Bulk purchases only work for certain products – Loose leaf and pens, absolutely. Glue sticks and protractors, not so much.
  • Buy online – One way or another, you will be buying a lot of paper. Heavy paper. Make your life a little easier by letting someone else do the carrying. You can top off online bulk orders with smaller items — crayons, compasses, pencil cases — to qualify for free shipping or coupons.

Taking Notes

When it comes to your child’s paper supplies, the teacher’s word is law. But if you do have some wiggle room, take the time to explore your options. Kids will prefer a notebook with their favorite musician or tv show character on the front, but for your money, it’s better to be practical.

Standard Binders

1 1/2" Avery Heavy Duty View Binders with One Touch EZD Rings

Binders have one main advantage: students can add and remove paper and folders as needed. When handing in classwork or receiving printouts, that’s very useful.

We suggest a heavy duty, d-ring binder like the 1 1/2″ Avery Heavy Duty View Binder with One Touch EZD Rings. They’re sturdy, spacious, and able to survive a year of note-taking and banging around in a backpack. Filler paper not included.

Wirebound Notebooks

Five Star Wirebound Notebook

Some teachers prefer students to use spiral notebooks; paper is unlikely to escape via the closed rings, and folders and perforated sheets take care of the classwork issue. These also make more sense to use with smaller class loads.

Five Star Wirebound Notebooks have no-snag spiral locks, pockets, and a plastic cover that will last. Look for one subject, five subject, and three subject notebooks.

Composition Notebooks

Black Marble Composition Notebook

These are the notebooks younger students are encouraged to use to improve their writing. They pop up later in one’s education for special assignments, writing projects, and so on.

These are pretty straightforward; you can find recycled composition notebooks, but plain old Black Marble Composition Notebooks should be fine.

Portfolio Style Binders

Case-It Zipper Binder

These bulky, padded binders are in a class of their own, often functioning as part school bag with all their pockets and compartments. Zippers and velcro help keep everything in it’s place.

Older students will want a Case-it Zipper Binder; they’re cheaper than other brands, they look great, and they’re easy to organize.

Backpack Attack

Feeling practical, you may try to push your child toward a backpack they can keep using for a long time, something simple. But considering most kids destroy their backpacks by the end of the year anyway, cut your kid some slack and let them enjoy a backpack featuring their favorite characters.

Stay Clean with CleanWell

The back to school season is also a new start for germ and bacterial exposure. All it takes is one sneezy child in the cafeteria to get your child sick. Make sure your kid can stay active, healthy, and ready to learn by encouraging frequent hand washing during the day.

As a parent, you can minimize their exposure to harsh chemicals in soaps and hand sanitizers by switching to all natural cleansers. Formulated to be gentle yet thorough, CleanWell products use thyme oil’s well known antiseptic qualities to keep your child’s skin — and anything they might touch — clean and germ free.

This safe formula was developed to improve the quality of life for Conor, a child born with a severe immunodeficiency.
