The perfect seat for the big game

Ray settled into his recliner, a can of Genny in his weathered hand. The cold had aggravated his bursitis, preventing him from watching the game with the boys down at the Rusty Nail, but he was in good spirits as he watched the Sabres take the ice. He kissed his rabbit's foot for good luck and gave a quick nod to the Ryan Miller stand up permanently adorning the coffee table; this would be their year, the year they'd make it to the top.

"Lurleen!" he hollered to the kitchen, "Get yer butt out here and help me cheer on da Sabes!" Her Buffalo earrings waving with her quick gait, Lurleen waddled in, grumbling about being out of kummelweck and the impossibility of making herself a proper sandwich. She glanced at her husband, who was glued to the screen, and lightly rolled her eyes. "Ray, darlin', I love you but I don't know why you bother. You just get let down every year."

"You say dat, but I don't see you takin' off dem earrings dere."

Lurleen self-consciously put her hand to her ears, brushing the 14-karat gold dangle earrings that had been Ray's present to her for their eighth anniversary. "Why would I take 'em off? They're the nicest thing anyone's ever given me!"

He nodded, a satisfied smirk covering his lips. "Dey're gonna do it for us dis year. You watch."

Several hours later, a silent Lurleen turned off the TV and stored the remote control in the caddy next to her. She gently tousled Ray's hair and helped extract him from his easy chair, taking care to mind his injured shoulder. It had been a rough night and they were both ready for sleep.

As he pulled back the comforter and got himself into bed, he closed his eyes tightly and assured himself that next year...next year would be their year. And once his head hit his Buffalo Sabres Bedding 17" Square Pillow, all of Ray's dreams finally came true.
